Ever wondered what the difference is between a U87 and a 414 and a U47 and an SM58 on a grand piano? Ever wondered what the difference is between an M52 ribbon, an SM57, a Sennheiser MD421 or a U87 on a Marshall stack?
Well here’s your chance to find out. Quite literally there is no objective way to tell the difference between different mics on any given instrument because most of us simply don’t have the ability to conduct the standard A/B test. Well, we have gone out of our way to try to present un-biased evaluations of all types of mics across all types of instruments.
We evaluate our mics across kick drums, snares, hi-hats, toms, bass amps, all variety of guitar amps, acoustic guitars, acoustic pianos, percussion instruments, woodwinds, brass, strings, and human voices. While we can’t test every known mic across every known instrument, we give you easily the most comprehensive cross-section of microphone evaluations ever put together in one place.
We don’t make any direct comparisons, and we don’t rate anything. What we do is to give you a clean, unbiased sample to the best of our ability. We leave it up to you to evaluate the microphone, the availability, and the cost of each microphone and then draw your own conclusions. We find that there are sometimes clear differences between microphones of different costs, and sometimes you can hardly tell the difference between a microphone that costs $2,500 and a microphone that costs $80.
For the first time ever, you don’t need to read a printed review in a magazine to make your decision. Now you can actually find your microphone of interest and listen to it in a variety of environments.
