Instruments

Ever wonder how to get those great sounds off your instrument?

We take a close listen to a huge variety of instruments and mics, mic placements, and mic preamps – to collect a wide variety of sound samples. Our position is that there is not a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to record an instrument, but that there are a variety of sounds available.

We take a listen to micing a guitar amp from all positions with all variety of mics, and even some combinations of mics and placements. The number of variables is infinite, but we take a good cross-section of samples to give you some great sounds. You can listen to a huge variety of mics on a snare, or an acoustic guitar, or a piano, or an electric guitar, on a sax, on a trumpet, on a violin, or even a set of vibes.

This may help to guide you to a type of mic or a particular mic placement that will help you to achieve the sounds you are after. You can also evaluate a set of mics based on price, or element (condenser, dynamic, ribbon) and placement.
